Though the Alipore court has denied CBI's plea for NBW against Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, the court has said CBI has "full right to arrest" him.
Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar has been on the run for quite some time and has been ignoring CBI summons. This is the very individual who had earlier created a scene with the help of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when the CBI had come to Kolkata to arrest Kumar from his residence. This was when Banerjee had rushed to his rescue and had denounced the CBI for harassing the top cop. A team of CBI officials were detained unprecedentedly by the Kolkata Police after it went to the residence of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar at Loudon Street to question him in connection with the Saradha chit fund case. However later there was evidence that Kumar who was leading the investigation of the Saradha chit fund scam had concealed and tampered with evidence to guard influential beneficiaries of the Saradha ponzi scheme. Thereafter the CBI summoned him but he has not been responding. The CBI went to his home to arrest him but all in vain as he is untraceable.
The Saradha ponzi scheme was a scam which had the entire nation alarmed and almost 2,460 crore, people are said to have been involved. It was mostly the lower middle class and the poor people who had invested in the scheme from the states of Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand. It is also believed that many ministers and members of the Mamata Banerjee government were involved in the scam where hundreds and thousands of people were duped and left to suffer. There was a list of high profile names which appeared during the investigation, including those of Trinamool Congress MPs Kunal Ghosh and Srijoy Bose, former West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajat Majumdar, former sports and transport minister Madan Mitra and former finance minister P Chidambaram's wife Nalini. Although the Bengal CM made it very clear that she had no clue about her ministers being involved in the case. She had constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to look into the scandal and she made Rajeev Kumar the head of the investigation.
The CBI has now set up a special team to trace former Kumar, who has been evading the notices of the agency in connection with the Saradha ponzi scheme. Kumar had appealed for anticipatory bail to the he Barasat District and Sessions Court but he did not get any relief as his plea was denied. As per sources, the CBI has now constituted a special team to locate Kumar. The West Bengal DGP told the CBI that several notices have been sent to Kumar but he has not responded to any of them. It is evident that he is afraid of the consequences if he is questioned so he is on the run.
Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had tried her best to safeguard Rajeev Kumar and had gone against the CBI in doing so. It is believed that she has been wary of the fact that her ministries role in the scam would come out in the open. However her efforts failed miserably and the CBI is doing their job well in terms of forming a team to locate Kumar. It is also been said by the opposition in Bengal that Banerjee visited PM Narendra Modi as a desperate attempt to discuss this issue and rescue besieged top cop Kumar due to the timing of her visit. However Banerjee has made it clear that her meeting with the PM was not political and was mainly on the developmental issues of West Bengal.
It is also believed that Rajeev Kumar is very close to Banerjee so it is an embarrassment not only for the former top cop but also for the Bengal CM. The West Bengal DGP Virendra Kumar is in contact with the CBI and he responded to the CBI’s letter on Monday responded to the CBI's letter. As per sources, the DGP has told the CBI that an official letter has been sent to the official residence of Rajeev Kumar and his response in awaited. The DGP also mentioned that Kumar is on leave from September 9 to September 25.How ever Kumar has communicated to the DGP and said that he is seeking legal remedies and therefore cannot be resent before the CBI over the next few days.
The CBI has claimed that as the head of the probing team of the chit fund scam Rajeev Kumar is responsible for destructing evidence in the Saradha case, It is now clear that he is guilty so he is running away from the questioning of the CBI. It is now to be seen how the story unfolds and if Mamata Banerjee and her government is able to shield Rajeev Kumar as they have earlier tried. Kumar’s arrest will be a big blow to the Mamata Banerjee government as many of her cabinet ministers in connection with the chit fund scam might end up in jail.
